Scoliosis, a type of spinal deformity, is a lateral curvature in the normally straight vertical line of the spine. The normal spine curves gently backward (kyphosis) in the upper back and gently inward in the lower back (lordosis). The management of scoliosis is individualized for each adult or pediatric patient depending on age, amount of curvature, and amount of time remaining for skeletal growth.
Most often found in girls in their early teens, boys may develop scoliosis, too. Although a cause is unknown for scoliosis, it does tend to run in families. Early diagnosis is important because, often, progression of the curve can be prevented with proper bracing.
The three basic treatments for scoliosis are observation, orthopedic bracing and surgery. The Orthopedic Group at Springfield Clinic includes board certified and fellowship trained spine specialists experienced in diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis.
